January 2024

The year 2023 ends with a rather recessionary economic tone on a global scale, not sparing Türkiye. However, it has gained two places in the world economic ranking according to the IMF (International Monetary Fund), moving from 19th to 17th place, once again demonstrating its resilience.

Inflation continues to be the country's main economic concern: its annual rate reached 64.8% over one year, a figure which remains high but which is expected to decrease in 2024 given the increase in the key rate since June 2023, increased from 8.5% to 42.5%. This tightening of monetary policy should reduce inflation to 36% at the end of 2024, according to the Turkish central bank, which estimated at the end of December that Türkiye is now “close to the level required to set the course for disinflation”.

This inflation accentuates the depreciation of the Turkish lira which, although weakened against the euro and the dollar, continues to be a factor of attractiveness for foreign investors but also for buyers. Türkiye's exports thus reached a record level of 255.8 billion USD (+0.6%) compared to the previous year. The coverage ratio of exports to imports gained 0.8 percentage points to reach 70.7% in 2023. The country's foreign trade deficit narrowed by 3.2% year-on-year. Turkey now aims to further increase its exports in 2024 to reach over USD 375 billion.

On the internal political side, the campaign for the municipal elections of March 2024 has officially begun. All eyes are on Türkiye's two largest cities, Ankara the administrative capital and Istanbul the economic capital, which passed into the hands of the opposition in 2019 and for which the ruling party is implementing a reconquest strategy.

Finally on the geopolitical level, Türkiye asserts a presence in thorny international issues and has been able to position itself as a mediator, whether it concerns questions surrounding the Mediterranean, Sweden and Finland in NATO, Upper Karabach, from Ukraine or Syria. Türkiye also affirms its position against Israel and intends to maintain a “moral, rational and effective foreign policy” according to statements by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Economic & business news from Türkiye

Flight of the first Turkish astronaut into space

Turkey's very first astronaut, Colonel Alper Gezeravci, a 44-year-old F-16 fighter pilot, took off from the Cape Canaveral base in Florida (United States), for a 14-day mission in orbit around the Earth . The flight, carried out with a SpaceX rocket, was initially planned for January 4 then postponed to the night of January 18. It was finally carried out on Friday January 19 at 12:49 a.m. Turkey time (9:49 p.m. GMT).

Colonel Gezeravcı will travel to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Axiom Mission 3 (Ax3), to carry out a series of scientific experiments for universities and science centers in Turkey. The Turkish astronaut is accompanied by Spanish, Italian and Swedish colleagues. The international crew is expected to dock with the ISS on Saturday. They will join seven people already on board. Before them, only 273 astronauts stayed aboard the ISS. The trip into space was made aboard a private shuttle from the American company Axiom Space, which will thus carry out its third mission in partnership with NASA.

This major event marks an important milestone in the history of Turkey and demonstrates the country's space ambition. Turkey is indeed leading a serious space program through its satellites and its space agency, created in 2018 (Türkiye Uzay Ajansı).

Colonel Alper Gezeravcı spent most of his career in the Turkish army. He has accumulated 15 years of flying experience on numerous aircraft, including the famous F-16. He was a captain at Turkish Airlines for 7 years, but also a captain, flight safety manager and captain in a commercial airline. Before preparing for his space mission, he was assigned to the 10th command unit at the Adana base. Before his trip to space, he said he was ready to “take the dreams of the Turkish people into the depths of space.”

Annual inflation reaches 64.77%

Inflation in Turkey reached 64.77% in 2023, a figure that remains high but slightly lower than market forecasts (65.1%). This figure is mainly explained by the increase in prices for transport (77% over the last 12 months), housing and public services (40.4%), leisure and culture (61.3%) and hotels , cafes and restaurants (93.2%). The price of food has reached its highest level, reaching a total of 72% annually.

Experts estimate that the recent announcement of the 49% increase in the minimum wage based on July 2023, i.e. almost 100% based on January 2023, brings the minimum monthly salary to 17,002 TL NET or 20,002.50 TL GROSS (≈ 625 Eur GROSS = 531 Eur NET) would continue to fuel this strong inflation.

The estimates (and objectives) of the Medium-Term Economic Governance Plan are for an inflation rate of 33% for 2024 and 15% for 2026.
